West Coast Floatation Systems, a division of The Hazelwood Group, is seeking a full-time Estimator to join a small team of hard-working, dedicated staff at its Duncan-based facility. We offer competitive wages, benefits, a positive work environment, and career advancement opportunities.
We’re looking for a motivated estimator with experience across a range of project sizes—ideally someone who’s taken the lead on jobs from start to finish. In this role, you’ll be working primarily with engineered drawings for aluminum bridges, gangways, and related products. Your responsibilities will include calculating materials, labour hours, and outsourced costs, and preparing professional RFP responses for our clients.
The ideal candidate will have 3–5 years of estimating experience in construction, fabrication, or manufacturing—experience in the marine or aluminum industries is a definite asset. Compensation
- $75,000-$85,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications
Summary
The Estimator is responsible for reviewing project specifications and preparing detailed cost estimates for floating dock design and construction projects. This role requires expertise in aluminum fabrication, drafting, and material takeoffs to ensure accurate and competitive project pricing. The Estimator will collaborate with outside engineering firms, the project manager, and suppliers to optimize project costs while maintaining high-quality standards. The Estimator may also take on some project management duties, such as procurement, to support the team during busy periods.
Our ideal candidate for this position has great customer service skills, communicates and collaborates well with the team, and can adapt easily to quickly shifting priorities and deadlines.
Job Duties
- Analyze project drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine scope and cost requirements.
- Prepare detailed estimates for materials, labor, and equipment costs related to the project.
- Conduct material takeoffs and develop comprehensive cost breakdowns.
- Collaborate with outside engineering firms to optimize project efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Source and negotiate pricing with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive cost estimates.
- Identify potential cost-saving opportunities through value engineering.
- Assist project managers with budget tracking and cost control throughout project execution.
- Maintain accurate records of estimates, pricing trends, and supplier costs.
- Step in and assume project management duties as needed, ensuring seamless project execution and coordination between teams.
- Assist with procurement activities, including sourcing and purchasing materials, equipment, and services to support project needs.
- Stay updated on industry trends, construction methodologies, and material costs related to marine construction.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in estimating for marine construction, aluminum fabrication, or related industries.
- Strong knowledge of aluminum fabrication techniques, materials, and industry best practices.
- Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar) for reviewing and modifying technical drawings.
- Experience in material takeoffs and cost estimating for marine structures.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills with keen attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and estimating software.
- Familiarity with construction codes and industry standards related to marine structures is an asset.
