Momentum Design Build, a division of The Hazelwood Group, is seeking a full-time Carpenter/Apprentice to join the team on various projects on Vancouver Island. Please note that we will only consider candidates with a minimum of 3rd year apprenticeship training and on-the-job experience for this role, or carpenters with a great deal of work experience.

Compensation

  • Journeyperson Carpenter – $35 to $37 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • 4th-year Carpentry Apprentice – $31.50 per hour.
  • 3rd-year Carpentry Apprentice – $29.05 per hour.

Summary

The Carpenter is responsible for assisting in the construction of residences and buildings. This includes all aspects of the building process in concrete, steel, and wood frame construction.

Knowledge of construction and remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment, materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety. The Carpenter must be proficient in building envelope detailing, interior & exterior finishing, forming & framing layout, and assembly including stairs and common rafters, reading blueprints, and mathematical skills and analytical skills necessary to do material estimates and carpentry calculations.

Job Duties

  • Concrete layout, forming, placing.
  • Framing layout, constructing, inspecting.
  • Door and window installation.
  • Weatherproofing, flashing, rain screening the building envelope.
  • Energy-efficient building practices and detailing.
  • Interior finishing including trim, doors, flooring & cabinets.
  • Placing of protective products to protect finished surfaces.
  • Understanding roofing details and installation.
  • Framing of decks, exterior woodwork.
  • Constructing and maintain structural woodwork.
  • Performing limited drywall, boarding, taping, and sanding when required.
  • Constructing and finishing cabinetwork and furniture from rough schematics and blueprints
  • Building required items including backing, specialty built-ins and features.
  • Building interior and exterior stairs and railings.
  • Building temporary structures for safety, storage, and weather protection.
  • Performing renovations as required
  • Erecting scaffolding of all types.
  • Operating and maintaining carpentry tools and equipment.
  • Assisting with the delivery of other related municipal services.
  • Keeping a daily log of tasks and site events.
  • Preparing Completely coded timesheets accurately each day.
  • Preparing preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Supervising site staff and temporary labourers.
  • Respecting and promptly responding to direction given by Site Manager.
  • Contributing and participating in the effective use of the Quality Management System.
  • Performing other related duties, including minor duties of other trades where certification is not required, and the work does not exceed own limitations.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of related work experience.
  • Knowledge of most aspects of carpentry and new construction practices.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures as per WorkSafe BC.
  • Knowledge of First Aid and CPR, certification is an asset.
  • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Client service, public interaction skills, and experience establishing and maintaining effective relationships with customers.
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Time management skills.
  • Ability to read building specifications, blueprints, and as-builds.
  • Able to do layout, framing, and finishing of typical projects, including a variety of room additions, and renovations.
  • Ability to draw appropriate sketches to communicate details to team members, and others.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with minimum supervision.
  • Collaborative in dealing with customers and fellow employees.
  • Customer-focused – responds promptly to customer needs.
  • Adaptable and receptive to changing circumstances.
