Compensation
- $40-$50 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
Summary
The Heavy-Duty Mechanic Journeyman is responsible for skilled mechanical repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in heavy civil construction. This role requires the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot both major and minor mechanical issues, as well as repair and adjust essential mechanical components. Assignments are provided through oral or written work orders, but the journeyman is expected to assess the scope of repairs needed independently. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
Job Duties
- Perform maintenance and repair services on heavy-duty equipment, including but not limited to cranes, forklifts, excavators, and trucks.
- Inspect heavy equipment to ensure proper performance and identify faults or malfunctions.
- Diagnose issues using computerized systems and other testing tools to determine the required repairs.
- Follow workplace safety policies, regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Promptly report unsafe conditions, accidents, or injuries to the Operations Manager for timely resolution or reporting.
- Continuously seek to improve operations, reduce turnaround times, and optimize workflows while delivering high-quality customer service.
- Conduct mechanical repairs on equipment both in the shop and during on-site road calls as needed.
- Install new equipment and additional components as required.
- Test repaired equipment to confirm proper functionality.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning and lubrication.
- Provide guidance and training to apprentices.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of maintenance and repair activities.
- Stay updated on advancements in technology and repair techniques.
- Perform additional mechanical repair tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Must possess a Journeyman’s certificate or Red Seal certification.
- Completion of post-secondary education in college, CEGEP, vocational, or technical training is required.
- Relevant credentials and certifications are mandatory.
- 5–10 years of experience as a Heavy-Duty Mechanic is essential.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- Demonstrated expertise in hydraulics and electrical systems, including proficiency with schematics and diagnostics.
- Familiarity with routine maintenance procedures and operations.
- Highly adaptable, with strong interpersonal skills to thrive in a diverse work environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Capable of performing well under pressure.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Skilled in handling situations with sensitivity, tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.
